The Complete Guide to Crystals for Beginners — How to Choose, Cleanse and Use Them
Crystals have been used across cultures for thousands of years — in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ancient Egyptian rituals and indigenous healing practices worldwide. Whether you are drawn to their beauty, their energy, or simply the mindful ritual of working with them, crystals can be a powerful addition to your sacred self-care practice.
Here is everything you need to know to get started.
Choosing Your First Crystal
The most important rule when choosing crystals is to trust your intuition. Walk slowly past a selection of crystals and notice which ones your eye keeps returning to. The crystal you are drawn to is usually the one you need.
That said, here are the most popular crystals for beginners and what they are traditionally associated with.
Rose Quartz — the stone of unconditional love and self-compassion. Rose quartz is associated with the heart chakra and is used to cultivate self-love, attract loving relationships and soften emotional wounds. Pale pink and gentle, it is one of the most universally beloved crystals.
Amethyst — the stone of calm and spiritual connection. Deep purple amethyst is associated with the crown chakra and is used to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, support intuition and create a sense of spiritual clarity. Excellent for the bedroom or meditation space.
Black Tourmaline — the stone of protection and grounding. Black tourmaline is traditionally used to create a protective energetic boundary, absorb negative energy and keep you grounded and centred. Many people keep a piece near the front door or on their work desk.
Clear Quartz — the master healer. Clear quartz amplifies the energy of other crystals and your own intentions. It is used in rituals for clarity, focus and amplification of purpose. An excellent choice if you are unsure where to start.
Selenite — the self-cleansing crystal. White and luminous, selenite is used to cleanse spaces, other crystals and your own energy field. Unlike most crystals, selenite does not need to be cleansed itself.
How to Cleanse Your Crystals
When you first bring a crystal home, and periodically after that, it is important to cleanse it of any energy it may have absorbed. There are several ways to do this.
Moonlight — place your crystals on a windowsill or outside overnight during a full moon. This is one of the most gentle and effective cleansing methods.
Sound — use a singing bowl, bells or even clapping to clear energy with vibration.
Smoke — pass your crystal through the smoke of palo santo, sage or incense with the intention of cleansing and resetting its energy.
Selenite — place your crystal on a selenite charging plate overnight.
Note: Some crystals should not be placed in water — including selenite, malachite and pyrite. Always research your specific crystal before using water cleansing methods.
Setting an Intention
Once your crystal is cleansed, hold it in both hands, close your eyes, take three deep breaths and speak your intention aloud or in your mind. Your intention might be as simple as I use this crystal to support my self-love practice or I carry this crystal to help me stay calm and grounded.
Intention is the most important part of any crystal ritual. The crystal is simply a tool — your focused attention and intention is the real power.
How to Use Crystals Daily
Place them in your home — on your bedside table, desk, altar or windowsill. Carry a small tumble stone in your pocket or bag. Hold them during meditation or breathwork. Use a crystal face roller or gua sha tool as part of your skincare ritual. Place them on your body during relaxation.
