Why Your Skincare Routine Is Not Working — And How to Fix It

Why Your Skincare Routine Is Not Working — And How to Fix It

You have invested in good products. You are consistent. But your skin still is not where you want it to be. Sound familiar? You are not alone — and the problem is rarely the products themselves.

Here are the most common reasons skincare routines stop working, and exactly what to do about each one.

1. You Are Using Too Many Active Ingredients at Once

More is not more when it comes to skincare actives. Combining multiple acids, retinol and vitamin C in the same routine does not accelerate results — it causes irritation, sensitivity and a compromised skin barrier. A damaged barrier cannot absorb anything properly, which means none of your products are working as well as they should.

The fix: Simplify. Use one active ingredient per routine. Vitamin C in the morning for protection. Retinol or AHA at night for renewal. Give each ingredient time to work before adding another.

2. You Are Not Applying Products in the Right Order

Skincare products need to be applied in the correct order to penetrate properly. The golden rule is thinnest to thickest — starting with the most water-based, lightweight formulas and finishing with the richest, most occlusive products.

The correct order: Cleanser, toner or essence, serum, eye cream, moisturiser, face oil (to seal everything in), SPF in the morning.

3. You Are Not Giving Products Enough Time

The skincare industry conditions us to expect fast results. The reality is that most active ingredients need 6–12 weeks of consistent use before meaningful results appear. Skin cell turnover takes approximately 28 days in young skin and longer as we age. Switching products every few weeks means you are constantly starting over.

The fix: Commit to a routine for a minimum of 8 weeks before evaluating whether it is working.

4. Your Routine Does Not Match Your Skin Type

Using products designed for a different skin type is one of the most common — and easily fixable — problems. Heavy creams on oily skin block pores. Lightweight gel moisturisers on dry skin provide insufficient hydration. Fragranced products on sensitive skin trigger inflammation.

The fix: Take our free Skin Type Quiz to identify your skin type and get a personalised product recommendation matched to your unique needs.

5. You Are Skipping SPF

Sun damage is responsible for up to 80% of visible skin ageing — wrinkles, dark spots, uneven texture and loss of firmness. If you are not wearing SPF every single day, every other product in your routine is fighting an uphill battle.

The fix: Apply SPF 30 or higher every morning as the very last step of your routine, even on cloudy days and even indoors near windows.

Your skincare routine should feel like a ritual, not a chore. When you use the right products for your skin type in the right order with genuine consistency, the results follow. Explore the Mahamayi skincare collection and build your perfect routine today.
