In Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine and wellness, every person is born with a unique combination of three energies called doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Your dominant dosha influences not just your personality and digestion, but your skin type, your sensitivities and the ingredients your skin responds best to.
Understanding your dosha is the foundation of true Ayurvedic skincare — and it goes much deeper than simply knowing whether your skin is oily or dry.
The Three Doshas and Your Skin
Vata Skin — Vata is governed by air and space. Vata skin tends to be thin, dry, fine-pored and prone to dehydration. It ages faster than other skin types and is sensitive to cold, dry weather. Vata skin craves rich, warming, nourishing ingredients like sesame oil, ashwagandha, saffron and rose.
Pitta Skin — Pitta is governed by fire and water. Pitta skin tends to be sensitive, combination or oily, prone to redness, inflammation, acne and hyperpigmentation. It reacts strongly to heat, spicy food and stress. Pitta skin responds best to cooling, calming ingredients like sandalwood, neem, aloe vera, rose water and turmeric.
Kapha Skin — Kapha is governed by earth and water. Kapha skin tends to be thick, oily, smooth and prone to congestion, enlarged pores and dullness. It benefits from stimulating, detoxifying ingredients like clay, tulsi, ginger, black pepper and kaolin.
